The Palmyra Hunt Club
The Palmyra Hunt Club is a pheasant hunting club based in Palmyra, NY (near Rochester). We hunt on approximately 3000 leased acres, with weekly
pheasant releases from mid October through February.
Today's club has 17 members. Dog ownership is not a requirement, but most members have either pointers or retrievers.
We believe that fellowship is an integral part of the hunt, and enjoy a hearty breakfast after each release.
Club History
Palmyra Hunt Club was started in 1954. There were 7 original members. Membership started at $50.00. The
first pheasants were purchased from Earl McMillan in Clifton
Springs and later from Harold Gray in Batavia. The pheasants
were released on Friday and always forced to fly from the crates. Club members had no idea where the
birds were released, and the rule was no hunting on Friday. Initially all dogs had to be pointers, but eventually one member bought a labrador. The leased land grew to 4300 acres in a few years, and varies slightly from year to year. Many members are also avid duck, turkey, and deer hunters as well. One club member even raised over 500 quail per year!
